NBA: LeBron James surpasses 40,000 points, but Los Angeles Lakers lose to Denver Nuggets.

LeBron James became the first NBA player to reach 40,000 career regular-season points on Saturday against the Denver Nuggets.

However, he called it as "bittersweet" when his Los Angeles Lakers lost 124-114 to the reigning NBA champions.

"Being the first player to do something, it's pretty cool in this league," said the 39-year-old, who finished with 26 points.

"You just know the history, you know the greats that have come through."

With 10 minutes and 39 seconds left in the second quarter, James scored the historic shot with a driving lay-up from the left side of the basket, giving the Lakers a 37-32 lead.

During a stoppage, the audience gave James a standing ovation, and the ball he used to attain the milestone was taken out of play.

However, the Nuggets extended their winning streak to six games with 35 points from Nikola Jokic, leaving James with mixed feelings.

The main thing is always the main thing and that's the win," he went on to say.

"And I hated that it had to happen in a defeat, especially against a squad that plays so well.

"We played some good basketball but weren't able to close it out, so [it's] bittersweet, but I enjoyed every moment on the floor."
