How to Beat Iowa: Three Crucial Points for Northwestern

Northwestern will face a surging Iowa club at Welsh-Ryan Arena on Saturday.

After starting conference play 0-3, the Hawkeyes are 9-6 in the Big Ten. Three of Iowa's last four wins have come at home against Wisconsin and against Michigan State.

Based on his Big Ten Sixth Man of Year performance last season, Payton Sandfort leads it.

Sandfort averages 15.7 points and 6.6 rebounds. He just scored 26 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists, including 18-of-19 from the free throw line. Iowa's offense is strong,

but its defense allows 78.8 points per game. Northwestern can utilize that side of the ball, but it won't want a track meet with Iowa.

Iowa is one of the nation's top scoring basketball teams, unlike football, where it plays defensively.

Northwestern wants to slow down the Big Ten's fastest squad, the Iowa Hawkeyes, and keep the game in the halfcourt. According to, Iowa averages 74.4 possessions per game while NU averages 67.6.

Both teams have had offensive success this year in different ways.
