Do not plant seeds Katie Boulter claims victory over Marta Kostyuk at the San Diego Open

On Sunday, unseeded Katie Boulter of England defeated sixth-seeded Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 to win the San Diego Open singles title

In the week-long WTA 500 event, 27-year-old Boulter won her second pro singles title with her fifth straight win over higher-seeded players.

"I can't stop smiling," Boulter added. "I've been wanting this my whole career and now I've got to move my goalposts and keep it going."

As darkness set early in the match, twice delayed by intermittent showers, both players struggled to acclimate to the unseasonably cool, windy, and gloomy mid-50s weather.

Boulter overcame Kostyuk's speed and athleticism to stop a run of unforced errors in the first set of her San Diego Open debut.

Boulter fought five set chances before sending an inaccurate forehand past the baseline to defeat 7-5, showing perseverance that would later serve her well.

Boulter recovered her stride and won the second set in heated backcourt rallies.

After 30 minutes, Boulter served for the match at 5-2 and hit a crosscourt forehand past Kostyuk to win the title.
