Cardinals agree with shortstop, a three-time All-Star Crawford (reference)

A source told MLB.com on Monday that the Cardinals signed veteran shortstop Brandon Crawford as insurance behind rookie phenom Masyn Winn after Tommy Edman's offseason right wrist surgery.

Before the contract is finalized, Crawford, 37, must pass a physical at the team's Florida headquarters on Tuesday.

The team has not confirmed the deal.Crawford was a three-time All-Star, four-time Gold Glover, and 2015 Silver Slugger winner with the Giants in his 13-year career.

Crawford, a career.250 hitter, hit.194 with a.273 on-base percentage in 93 games in 2023 due to injuries.

The shortstop was an All-Star in 2021 with.298 batting average, 24 home runs, and 90 RBIs.

Crawford placed fourth in the NL MVP voting and won his fourth Gold Glove that season.

In recent days, middle infielders Tim Anderson (Marlins), Nick Ahmed (Giants), Amed Rosario (Rays), Enrique Hernandez (Dodgers), and Gio Urshela (Tigers) signed elsewhere.

On Monday morning, Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Edman was likely weeks away from hitting live pitching.
