"After practice on Tuesday evening, he (Messi) reported feeling well.

TOKYO(AP) — After disappointing fans in Hong Kong, Lionel Messi made a 30-minute appearance in Tokyo on Wednesday for Inter Miami's latest exhibition match in Asia, but some fans wanted more.

Messi came off the bench for the final half hour, revitalized his teammates, and possibly had the best chance of the game in the 80th minute, with two point-blank shoots that were both saved by the Vissel Kobe defense.

But it was nothing compared to the booing that erupted in Hong Kong after Messi was forced to sit out the entire game due to a groin ailment. Some fans requested a refund.

After a 0-0 stalemate in regulation, the match went to penalty kicks, which Vissel won 4-3.

Messi did not take a penalty, prompting jeers from the crowd of 28,614 at Tokyo's National Stadium, which seats 68,000.

The Argentina star seemed remorseful during a rare press conference in Tokyo on Tuesday, where he addressed the public relations calamity.

He had stated that he was unsure whether he would be fit enough to play in Tokyo, leaving supporters guessing until he began warming up in the second half, eliciting tremendous shouts from the audience.

"After practice on Tuesday evening, he (Messi) said he felt good, so we decided he would play 30 minutes," Inter Miami coach Gerardo Martino stated.
